The Best Maritime Colleges and Academies in the US

Author:

Updated:

The best maritime colleges in the US fall into two groups. Seven maritime academies train licensed merchant marine officers, while four universities teach naval architecture, ocean engineering and naval careers.

This guide compares all eleven maritime schools on license route, training ship, acceptance rate and cost. It is written for US students and parents choosing a school, and every figure was checked in October 2026.

What Is a Maritime College?

A maritime college trains people for careers at sea and in the shipping industry. Most combine a bachelor’s degree with sea training on a training ship, leading to a U.S. Coast Guard officer license.

A maritime academy is a maritime college with a regimented cadet program and a license track. In everyday searches, “maritime college”, “maritime academy” and “maritime school” mean the same kind of institution.

Core Maritime Disciplines Offered:

  • Marine Transportation (the deck officer track)
  • Marine Engineering (the engine officer track)
  • Naval Architecture
  • Maritime Business and logistics
  • Maritime Law (taught as coursework)
  • Environmental Science and marine safety
  • Oceanography and ocean engineering

Maritime law is the one discipline these schools teach only as coursework. Practicing admiralty law in the United States requires a law degree and a bar admission.

Graduates work at sea as deck and engine officers, or ashore in shipping companies, shipyards, ports and government agencies. License-track cadets can also earn a commission in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

How Many Maritime Academies Are There in the US?

The US has seven maritime academies that train licensed merchant marine officers. One is federal, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, and six are state academies.

The six state academies are SUNY Maritime, Massachusetts Maritime, Maine Maritime, Texas A&M Maritime, Cal Poly Maritime and Great Lakes Maritime. The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) supports them with federal training ships and student incentive payments.

The U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy are military service academies, not merchant marine academies. Their graduates serve as officers, although qualified watch officers from both can qualify for a third mate license.

How Do You Become a Licensed Officer Through a Maritime Academy?

You complete an approved deck or engine program at a maritime academy, train at sea as a cadet and pass the U.S. Coast Guard exam. You graduate with a Merchant Mariner Credential endorsed as third mate or third assistant engineer.

  1. Meet entry rules: US citizenship for an officer license, a Coast Guard medical exam and the age and health requirements for seafarers.
  2. Enroll in a license track: Marine Transportation for deck officers, Marine Engineering for engine officers.
  3. Complete sea training: summer sea terms on a training ship or cadet duties on commercial ships, recorded for the license exam.
  4. Pass the Coast Guard exam: deck graduates qualify as Third Mate (Unlimited Tonnage), engine graduates as Third Assistant Engineer (Unlimited Horsepower).
  5. Receive STCW endorsements: the credential carries the international endorsements set by the STCW Code.

The STCW endorsement is what a US officer needs for international voyages. Our guide to the STCW certificate explains the certificate of competency and its renewal.

Third mate is the first rung on the deck officer ladder shown in our guide to ranks on merchant navy ships. Engine graduates start in the role described in third engineer duties.

Can You Get a License Without Going to a Maritime Academy?

Yes. Under 46 CFR 11.407, a sailor qualifies for third mate after three years of ocean deck service, including six months of bridge watchkeeping.

Mariners call this the “hawsepipe” route. A Coast Guard-approved Apprentice Mate training program is a third option.

How Much Does a Maritime Academy Cost?

Published 2026–27 in-state tuition at the state academies runs from $7,070 (SUNY Maritime) to $12,536 (Maine Maritime), before housing. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the Naval Academy and Webb Institute charge no tuition.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

The largest maritime-specific aid is MARAD’s Student Incentive Payment (SIP) program, worth up to $64,000 over four years. It is open to state academy cadets in the Strategic Sealift Midshipman Program.

In return, SIP graduates keep their unlimited license for six years and work at least three years in the US maritime industry. The main route is officer service on US-flag vessels, plus eight years in a reserve unit if commissioned.

Each school also offers its own scholarships, grants and loans. Start with these financial aid pages:

  1. SUNY Maritime College
  2. Florida Institute of Technology
  3. Massachusetts Maritime Academy
  4. Maine Maritime Academy
  5. LSU New Orleans (formerly University of New Orleans)
  6. United States Naval Academy
  7. United States Merchant Marine Academy
  8. Webb Institute

How Do You Choose a Maritime College?

Choose by career goal first, then cost. A sea-going officer career needs one of the seven license academies; a ship design career needs a naval architecture degree.

Career Opportunities After Graduation

Graduates of maritime colleges work in four main sectors:

  • Marine Industry: officer posts with transport and shipping companies, and shore roles such as bunker surveying
  • Naval Services: U.S. Navy, Navy Reserve, Coast Guard
  • Manufacturing: shipyards, engineering and production companies
  • Energy: offshore drilling, including the path to becoming an oil rig worker, and renewable energy

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics put the May 2025 median pay at $92,460 for captains, mates and pilots and $109,530 for ship engineers. It projects 4% employment growth for water transportation workers from 2025 to 2035.

Internship Programs and Career Services

Every license academy builds sea time into the degree through sea terms, and some add cadet placements on commercial ships. Webb places students in shipyards and at sea during its winter work terms.

Universities such as Florida Institute of Technology and LSU New Orleans rely on internships with marine industry partners. Ask each school which employers recruit on campus and how many graduates sail on their license.

Online Learning and Distance Education Options

Officer license programs cannot be completed online, because they require sea time and practical training. Graduate study is a different matter:

  • SUNY Maritime offers its M.S. in International Transportation Management 100% online. It also runs a master’s program in Maritime and Naval Studies.
  • Florida Institute of Technology teaches its M.S. in Ocean Engineering on the Melbourne campus.
